Jazz Artist Neil C. Young – Interview!

When did you first get into music? What or who Inspired you?

My family are musical, my dad taught and still composes and conducts, my mum sings, my brother is also a musician (One of the drummers on the new record) who I’ve played with throughout our lives. Along with my family, all the many, many musicians who I’ve worked and played with. I’ve learned something from everyone, sometimes its a big thing but equally as important it can be a small thing.

2 – Who did you grow up listening to, and does that impact on what you create now?

I grew up listening and playing classical music from an early age and then in later in school and college life New Order, Prince, U2, Aerosmith, The Black Crowes and then Jazz hit with Miles Davis Quintet and Keith Jarrett. Then at music college the influence of Latin music became involved with the emergence of Salsa.

3 – How long have you been playing/writing?

Since about the age of 4 i’ve been knocking about on all sorts of instruments.

4 – How often do you play live (include details and links for any upcoming gigs)?

It varies but on average around 4 times a month. Sometimes, as with June and July just gone, it was much more but it all equals out. I play with all kinds of different lineups and settings not just my thing. The next gig I have is a jazz duo gig with my good friend Matt Thompson on piano before then a wedding event at the end of the month.

5 – What has been your favourite moment in music?

Hmmm, well, seeing a picture of some other Neil Young in a paper advertising my gig in Cuba was pretty funny, as he has enough hair (still..) for the both of us it was quite the shock for some of the audience especially when they sheepishly asked for autographs.

Playing under Sir Simon Rattle in Symphony Hall in Birmingham was incredible. The whole week of rehearsing was rammed full of knowledge gems!

6 – Where is the best place to find you online?
