Basement Revolver-Interview

1 – When did you first get into music? What or who Inspired you?
Chrisy: I grew up playing violin, but I started writing songs/learning guitar when I was 13. Mostly what inspired me is the music that I can’t let go of – from mewithoutyou to Courtney Barnett.
Nimal: I started playing clarinet when I was 8. Both my dad and brother played cello which was the main influence in becoming a musician myself. When my brother switched to drums I naturally gravitated towards bass.
Brandon: I first started getting into music around grade 5 I would say. Thats when I got a drum kit as a gift from my parents.
2 – Who did you grow up listening to, and does that impact on what you create now?
Chrisy: I grew up listening to everything from folk music to hardcore and stuff that generally fit into that scene, I guess that was what was popular at the time. Specifically stuff like Laura Marling and A Day to Remember; so really opposite sides of the spectrum.
Nimal: I grew up listening to a lot of pop punk and hardcore bands like Relient K and Underoath. After spending a bunch of years studying jazz music I guess growing up on bands like these is what keeps my playing straight ahead and simple when it needs to be.
Brandon: I grew up listening to a lot Sigur Ros, and Broken Social Scene. I would say they definitely affect my creative ideas still.
3 – How long have you been playing/writing?62f173c4-5a76-4718-a96e-1836044236b4.jpg
Chrisy: Since I was thirteen, as a band about a year!
Nimal: I have been playing music for the past 14 years. (I guess you know my age now) Besides the odd bass line I leave the writing to Chrisy.
Brandon: I have been playing music for about 12 years.
4 – How often do you play live (include details and links for any upcoming gigs)?
We play in Hamilton once every few months. Now that were expanding a bit you will see us more often in Peterborough, Guelph and Toronto as well. Keep your eyes out for a potential tour this summer though. Our next show is in June with Ptarmigan at the Baltimore House in Hamilton
5 – What has been your favourite moment in music?
Chrisy: That is a really tough question. I guess I can really only speak to my experience, and the house show scene has been a pretty cool thing. Watching lesser-known but incredibly talented bands and musicians play music in my livingroom has been pretty special.
Nimal: Playing Supercrawl was pretty great. It was amazing to be playing such a big festival in the early days of being a band. The weather was also pretty horrid that day but a bunch of people came out regardless. I think we will remember performing for a bunch of umbrellas for quite some time
Brandon: Some of my favourite moments in music have been the memories I have playing in some of the highschool bands I was apart of in Peterborough Ontario.
