The 1975 aim for Glastonbury

Matt Healy of Indie Pop band, The 1975, has made the aspirations of the band very clear declaring ‘”I want to headline Glastonbury!”
“Not next year, but soon. I never used to say stuff like this – I’m not a mental, insane narcissist – but there’s so much faux modesty in music now. It’s transpired that we get to play arenas all over the world, so why now would I not want to headline Glastonbury?”
Whilst some might see this as a little arrogant, others will find it refreshing to see such an ambitious young band setting their sights high. As Matt keenly points out, it is not unlikely that they would be up there on the line-up, if not headlining: “I’m not being a d***head, but who is it going to be? If you want a young guitar band to headline Glastonbury in the next few years, The 1975 are the only real option… If Arctic Monkeys can do it on their second album, I can do it, no problem.”

1 – When did you first get into music? What or who Inspired you?

I always remember my father’s vinyl collection. Always used to play really loud the banjo track  from the deliverance soundtrack . Other than that was my mothers piano. I always used to play it by ear and make a lot of noise. When was in high school we formed a band of indie music called stone garden which took me to different experimental projects, by then i knew how to play keyboards, guitar and bass. Then in the late 90’s i started mixing electronic music at raves and parties all over Venezuela and some parts of Europe which took me to a 15 years old career at it, bringing me to the UK where i started producing in London studios. From that i decided to launch my label Beetroot records, an eclectic label which intends to release underground music in vinyl. When i started sharing with other artists i decided to build my own studio which lead me to create the Dice.

2 – Who did you grow up listening to, and does that impact on what you create now?

I grew up listening to old school hip hop like tribe called quest , public enemy, de la soul , pharcyde among others. When I was a teenager I was very into grunge and classic rock like the beetles , Rolling Stones , led zeppelin . I think my music has a bit of every band I love. It’s very hard to decide which bands have influenced me as there are so many I love.

3 – How long have you been playing/writing?

Since I was young I was playing the piano and guitar but more seriously was when I was in high school doing my first band.

4 – How often do you play live (include details and links for any upcoming gigs)?

At the moment I’m focusing in finishing the album , hopefully soon after that we can start playing live

5 – What has been your favourite moment in music?

My favourite moment when I decided I was going to go all the way with my music. I took the courage to do my album and dedicate all I have towards it. Also I have been in some amazing gigs that have been sublime. I will never forget Horace Andy playing at Glastonbury .

6 – Where is the best place to find you online?
