Line Mari Talks About Her Summer Single ‘Crush’

1 – When did you first get into music? What or who inspired you?
I´ve started learning on my own how to play guitar and piano at the age of 10. The music just came to me. You can say that I´m self-taught. I think I was about 13 when I started writing my own music down. After I started playing guitar and piano songs with lyrics and melodies started popping up. I´ve started hearing them in my head.
It was a bit annoying when it happened in the middle of the night though. It was a bit annoying than; it still is annoying today, especially when I´m very sleepy and I really just want to go back to sleep. Hehe. Nevertheless it is all worth it.
Today whenever it happens to me, I just have to wake up and write it down and record it. I also get songs and melodies in my head at any hour, not only at night.
I have also tried not to be inspired by any particular artist or band. I have always tried my best to find my own style when it comes to music.
But I must say that I do have a huge respect for other artists and bands out there. There is so much great talent.
If I have point out any artists or band that might have inspired me from music today it has to be Adele, Pink and the Foo Fighters.
First of all I love Adele´s style and stunning voice. She is an amazing artist. When it comes to P!nk she is just a fantastic artist and performer. Foo Fighters is an incredible band and have written a lot of really cool songs.
But I must add that I truly love vintage music. I have a great respect for music icons such as The Beatles, David Bowie, Prince and Jimi Hendrix and many more.
2 – Who did you grow up listening to, and does that impact on what you create now?
I have always tried to find my own style when it comes to music. I have tried not to be influenced by other artists and bands. But of course I do have a huge respect for other artists and bands that has produced a lot of great music.
It´s so sad that several great music icons recently have left us. I have tons of respect for music icons such as David Bowie, Prince and Jimi Hendrix and many more. I truly love vintage music.
I also listen to all kinds of music. That includes pop, soul, rock, punk, classical, edm – music and more.
3 – How long have you been playing/writing?
I have played guitar and piano since I was 10 years old. I started out learning how to play the instruments by myself. Later on I also started learning how to play other instruments as well. At the moment I´m also teaching myself how to play fiddle.
A couple of years later I actually started writing poetry when I was about 11-12. I was really interested in poetry. And than around the time I became a teenager, the music just hit me literally speaking. I´ve started getting lyrics and melodies in my head. And I just wrote it down and recorded it. No matter what time of the day it was. It was sometimes a bit annoying when it happened in the middle of the night, when I had to wake up just to write it down or record it. It still is hehe.
I was very shy when I was a teenager. Therefore I didn´t perform any of my own written song material before I was about 16. Everything I wrote back then was so personal to me. My music has always been very personal.
4 – How often do you play live (include details and links for any upcoming gigs)?
Right now, I´m actually planning some upcoming showcases, both in Norway and in the UK.
All the info will be updated on my home page:
I have played on different venues and festivals in Norway. And I also did a gig at the Bedford in London.
5 – What has been your favourite moment in music?
Well. It happened to me a couple of years ago. I was going to a gig in Tromsø, in Norway. I was waiting at a bus stop. I had my guitar with me. Suddenly this little girl walking with her mum stopped and stared at me. She was about 5, maybe 6 years old I reckon. She pointed at me and said “Mum, I want to be just like her when I grow up”. And she smiled like the sun and walked past me.
That was really a confident boos. I will never forget that moment.
Otherwise I will never forget the first time I did a gig in London. It was at The Bedford. People there were so nice and gave me really good feedback.
And of course it was truly special for me when I got the opportunity to work on my upcoming album with such incredible and fantastic producers such as Rob Cass and Pearse MacIntyre.
It was so cool to record my debut album in London.
