Stephen Harrison – Interview

DSCF0070_8
1– When did you first get into music? What or who Inspired you?
From my old brothers who already had guitars. I was tremendously impressed by them, and their interest in music scene in London in the late 1960’s and early 70s. One of my brothers gave me a Yamaha FG140 acoustic guitar which I still have. They were listening to Donovan, Dylan, The Beatles, The Doors, etc. I wanted to be like them and copied my older brothers! It was a very exciting time musically and soon I was writing my own songs.
2 – Who did you grow up listening to, and does that impact on what you create now?
I grew up listening to The Beatles, Donovan, Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, TRex, Bowie. In my late teens I was influenced by Punk and Post Punk. Like many, when Punk came along I kind of rejected what went before, but have since come round to accepting what was great in the 60’s and 70’s before that time. I like ‘pop’ but most of all I like the music of ‘The Greats’ who wrote from deep within themselves, and not to any market or with any particular formula in mind.
3 – How long have you been playing/writing?
Since my teenage years. It seemed imperative to have a guitar and sing. I was simply drawn towards writing songs. It became an important part of my self expression.
4 – How often do you play live (include details and links for any upcoming gigs)?
I try to play live at least twice a month – even if it is just at an open mic event. See my website for details on love shows.
5 – What has been your favourite moment in music?
Having a song of mine played on BBC Radio Scotland.

Alan Bonner – Interview

small

1 – When did you first get into music? What or who Inspired you?

I’ve been obsessed with music for as long as I can remember. I grew in a tiny village in rural suffolk in the 80’s and 90’s and always found life around me kind of grey and drab and I remember Top of the Pops as a little kid and seeing people like Madonna twirling around in a pink wig to Like a Virgin or re- runs Bowie in all  his  glam rock finery and feeling like it was a portal to a more interesting colourful world

2 – Who did you grow up listening to, and does that impact on what you create now?

As a child it was ABBA and The Beatles, as a teenager  Bowie, Britpop, Fleetwood Mac, a lot of 60’s ,70’s  and 80’s music  as well as people like Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush etc, later on  Arcade Fire, Rufus Wainwright, The National and a million other people.  I think all of it has impacted me as a musician in some way even if what I create now doesn’t necessarily sound like those artists. Everything I write or play is a product of my own life experience and my own world view which is never going to be the same as anyone else’s.  That’s what’s great about songwriting. Everyone’s expression is unique.

3 – How long have you been playing/writing?

Ive been singing since I was about 12 and  have been writing songs and playing in bands since my teens but I only really took it seriously when I made my first solo album in 2007.

4 – How often do you play live (include details and links for any upcoming gigs)?

I play live regularly usually at least twice a month – I’ve been in Berlin for the last few months and playing all over the city discovering new places to play and meet/ hear other artists. I’m in the process of booking a UK and European Tour  that will begin in the summer and go into next year but that dates I can confirm so far are:

23/6 – TIK NORD THEATRE IM KINO – BERLIN- GERMANY-

5 – What has been your favourite moment in music?

There’s been a few I think touring the US with my last album in 2013 was definitely a high point.  I was playing tiny venues in some strange towns at times but I had such a blast and met so many great people.  Whenever I get to travel anywhere with my music I feel truly blessed to be doing what I do.
