- When did you first get into music? What or who Inspired you?
I first got into music at 3/4 years old after my mum, regrettably, turned on the spice girls. The poor woman had to put up with my obsession for years haha! And then 1 day, my mum randomly found a video on Michael Jackson’s live performances. This turned my world the right way up! I finally knew why I existed! He inspired me to become an artist.
- Who did you grow up listening to, and does that impact on what you create now?
I grew up listening to a wealth of different artists and sounds, which I didn’t realise until I grew up how lucky I was, both influences were environmental and family inflicted.
My dad would play the grooves from West Africa, Ivory Coast, where they spoke/sang in French. The heavy electric funk guitars with groove based bass lines and four-to-the-floor kick drum, just made it infectious- you just HAD to dance! He would also play the sweet and humble sounds of South Africa the acapella group known as ‘Ladysmith Black Mambazo’ which taught me to fall in love with melody and harmony. On the flip side, my mother would play music from Jennifer Lopez, Whigfield’s ‘Saturday Night to Janet Jackson. Mum does love her catchy tunes! The environmental songs I got into was whatever was ‘hot’ at the time like, Britney Spears, destiny’s child etc. I then got a boyfriend who was very into metal, blues funk and alternative music which I also fell in love with and drew inspiration from. I can’t really say what impact this has had on my music but I can say that it has taught me, music has no colour, no prejudice, no indifference it’s just one heart with an infinite amount of sounds pumping through our veins.
- How long have you been playing/writing?
I have been singing since I was 8. I was an awful singer around this age! I remember my sister saying ‘oh my god! You were so out of tune!’, after hearing me sing along with my CD player. From that day on, I locked myself in my room everyday until I was 14/15 years old learning how to sing through mimicking artists on radio. I have been writing melodies all my life through improvisation and never realised it! I have officially been writing songs and music for 5 years now.
- How often do you play live (include details and links for any upcoming gigs)?
I play as often as possible!! I have a gig on the 30th March for Play It Forward. And loads more that have dates that are yet to be confirmed! 🙂
- What has been your favourite moment in music?
My favourite moment in music was when I got to open for American R&B artist, Anthony Hamilton! It was my first time performing to a crowd that big. My dream came true!
