1 – When did you first get into music? What or who Inspired you?
I started playing the drums when I was 9 years old, joined my first band when I was 10 and played my first gig at 11. I feel music so intensely, so intimately, it is who I am more than anything else in this world. It has always been that way since I can remember. I hear it in my head almost all the time, all different kinds, I have no idea where it is coming from.
2 – Who did you grow up listening to, and does that impact on what you create now?
I have had a mad love affair with music since I was 5 when I started becoming aware of all the different music being played by my 3 older sisters and my dad. There was jazz, the Beatles & Stones, Led Zepplin, David Bowie, Jethro Tull, The Monkeys, The Ramones, The Pretenders, Duran Duran, U2 and so much more! As I walked through my house I would hear so many different bands and styles, and I think that it all got a bit mixed together and imprinted on my brain. I seem to have a unique ability to assimilate and blend different musical forms and styles into something that often strikes listeners as both new and old in the same breath. I really think that this is the result of listening to so much different music at the same time though out my childhood.
3 – How long have you been playing/writing?
I have been playing music for 30 years and writing songs now for about 25 years. I started drums at 9 and played drums in various bands up until 15 when I started teaching myself guitar, singing and piano. I started writing songs at this point as well. It seemed that so often when I would try to learn someone else’s song by listening to them I would get it wrong, so I decided it would just be easier to write my own songs. That way there was no right or wrong. And actually it seemed very natural for me to write songs, as if I had done it before.
4 – How often do you play live (include details and links for any upcoming gigs)?
I haven’t played live in a couple of years. I decided to take a different route with Jupiter In Velvet. That is, to create a fan base, build radio airplay and, develop a reasonable amount of media recognition and credibility before touring. I have done so by putting out music, promoting it like a maniac and building online relationships with fans, radio and media. Fortunately, the eventuality of touring is now on the forefront of my plan. I am currently auditioning musicians and plan to be on the road later this fall and right after the 1st of the year.
5 – What has been your favorite moment in music?
I can’t say whether I’ve had a single favorite moment in music. However, there have been some very touching moments when at certain times in my varied career, I have had someone either come up to me after a show, or tell me via social media, how much a song of mine meant to them. It has been moments like those that makes all the thousands and thousands of hours I have given to music seem so meaningful, to know that one of my songs made someone happy or helped them a little bit in their life.
