Apple Of My Eye

1 – When did you first get into music? What or who Inspired you?

We’ve been playing music together for 10 years or so, it’s our way of having a good time! Most nights end up with us writing a silly song or teaching each other folk tunes, gradually this materialised into a set and Apple of My Eye was born! This kind of communal sharing of music is really what folk is all about and we hope that idea is still present in our music.

2 – Who did you grow up listening to, and does that impact on what you create now?

Three of our members Chris, Dan and Ellie are the sons and daughter of the husband and wife folk band Thornbridge. They came to the band with a huge repertoire of traditional tunes and an uncanny ability to harmonise. More recently we’ve been listening to the Moulettes, Lau and Lisa Knapp, there’s some very exciting things happening with the music right now.

3 – How long have you been playing/writing?

Apple of My Eye has been around now for just over 4 years but we’ve been playing and writing together for far longer in various bands and line-ups. In many ways the band is about taking the musical iras and tunes that we’ve been playing in each others kitchens out into the world!

4 – How often do you play live (include details and links for any upcoming gigs)?

Our bouzouki player, Chris, lives on a narrow boat and our waterborne rehearsals often end up as impromptu live performances. If you miss us on the East London waterways you can catch us this December at: –

“Folk of Ebola” – Dec 7th, Jamboree, Limehouse, London, 6.30

5 – What has been your favourite moment in music?

We often play at festivals during the summer but our absolute favourite has been Exile festival in the Derbyshire dales. It’s small, inclusive and the whole festival stays up all night around campfires sharing tunes. We headlined there this year and it was atmosphere was electric. It’s hugely flattering when people sing your lyrics back at you.

1 – When did you first get into music? What or who inspired you?

I used to sit outside my brothers bedroom secretly listening to him playing his records. I loved the sound guitars made and nagged my dad until he bought me my first guitar. I was only 10. My first song – ‘Wild Thing’ by the Troggs.

2 – Who did you grow up listening to, and does that impact on what you create now?

I grew up listening to so many like the Beatles/ ELO, then moved on to Zeppelin/ Guns n’ Roses, then Jazz in music college to people like George Benson. I think they have all influenced me and definitely impact on what I create now.

3 – How long have you been playing/writing?

I’ve been writing my own songs since I was 12. I used an old eight-track recorder back then. I’ll have to dig them out at some point. Would be funny. You never know there could be some hidden gems.

4 – How often do you play live (include details and links for any upcoming gigs)?

I’m gigging most nights. I’ve played most places, been around the world from South America to Japan. From 2 or 3 people in workmens halls to theatres of 800+. I love it. There’s nothing better than getting the crowd going with a few rockin’ numbers.

The first gig of the tour will be the album launch on Wednesday 28th November 2015 at the Glanfa Stage, Cardiff Millennium Centre. For the others- see TOUR DATES on the Website.

5 – What has been your favourite moment in music?

Hearing my music being played on BBC Radio 2 was exciting. I definitely want more of that. I’ve also played with Ronan Keating and Robbie Williams which was cool. But my number 1 gig has to be my Dad’s local pub. All the family and friends go there. Up close and personal. Very emotional and bags of fun.
